The artistic core of 'Alma Bonita' consists Karla Franco (Mexico) and Josje Eijkenboom (The
Netherlands). Our international approach is tangible in our work and we often play multilingual.
We work collectively, which means: we see ourselves as one body with two or more heads/hearts/souls/voices.
We work without a hierarchical structure but push the right elements (voices/bodies) forward at the right time.
We collaborate with artist from all over the world (Chile, Israël, Norway) to create a network of canon.
With the diversity within our team and the stories of our ancestors, we try to map the bigger picture.
To illuminate the world from different angles.
Rituals are an important part of our work and serve as an invitation to find a deeper understanding
and experience a greater sense of cohesion and unity.
But above all, Physical theater is the basis of our creation.
'When we move, everthing moves”.

Medusa / From the Fraction to the Body About the Project: Long before the Greeks transformed this story, Medusa was a Goddess, a symbol of life and death, a female figure that represents the cycles of nature, latent energy, and connection with earth. Playing with the idea of a fragmented body, with no head, gives us the freedom to discover new ways of conceiving the body and the opportunity to rewrite our story. An analogy about the reconstruction of new forms to move more freely, to heal, to be. Medusa: The myth of the snake-headed monster that cannot be seen in a mirror because it would mean death…but to be reborn, certain parts of us have to die. The perfomance is the result of collaborative creation, made by two women with physical theater base, buffon playfulness, improvisation, and live music. An invitation to look at ourselves as the beautiful monsters that we are and to love that freedom, knowing that we are living hearts, who experiences light and shadow in all stages of life. “To love a snake is to dance in the chaos of the unkown, to find yourself alive.” |

Karla FrancoMy name is Karla Franco, I started my studies at ESAY in Yucatan in 2008. Since then, I have explored different working methodologies. I participated in the creation of Viajante Teatro collective, giving birth to the project “Arquitectura e Interiorismos", a creation laboratory based on a direct encounter with the spectator, presenting the work at several festivals. Later on, I came across with the world of physical theater in 2015, with Jacques Lecoq's pedagogy, which led me to continue my research. In 2019, with the support of the ERASMUS scholarship, I participated in a residency at Odin Teatret as part of the IKARUS STAGEARTS project. Since 2018 I live in Berlin.
In 2020 I finished my MFA Devising Theater and Performance at Arthaus Berlin and Rose Bruford College. Since my story began in theater, the connection with the public has always been prevalent, and it is in the “How?” that I am involved in this path. From looking for unconventional theatrical spaces, one-on-one encounters with the spectator, I have always been interested in dealing at an interpersonal level in complicity with the public. As a performer I have found that I need to face my most human nature and my most ethereal state at the same time. Explore the space to create the atmospheres that accompany the ritual of the encounter in theater. My commitment is with life through theater. |
